Oats Halwa

Many of us eat Oats at home regularly. So there is always a stock of this at home. When we have guests at home, it is one easy dish that can be made quickly.

Ingredients:
Oats - 2 cups
Sugar - 4 cups
Ghee - 3/4 cup
Elaichi Powder - 2 tbsp
Cashew nut - 20 nos
Food colour - 1/4 tsp
Milk - 1 cup
Water - 4 cups

Method:
In a hard bottom vessel add Oats, water and milk and mix well and keep stirring till all mix together and forms a lump. Add sugar mix well. In 2 spoons of water mix the food colour and add to the mix and stir completely. Add ghee little at a time and mix well. Add cardamom powder and mix again. When the mixture starts becoming non sticky add the remaining ghee, fried cashew nuts and mix well.

Wait for the OPOS version of the same. 

Oats Idly by Sowpernica

Ingredients:
Oats – 1 ½ cup
Rava (or wheat rava) – ¾ cup
Salt – 1 ½ teaspoon
Curd – ¾ cup
Hing – ¼ teaspoon
Corrinader leaves – 2 teaspoons (finely chopped)
Green chillies – 2 (finely chopped)
Baking soda – ½ teaspoon
Oil – 1 teaspoon
Water – ½ glass
Mustard seeds – ½ teaspoon
 
Method:
Dry roast oats for 2 to 3 minutes & keep aside to cool.
Dry roast rava as well till golden brown.
Heat oil & add mustard seeds, allow spluttering.
Grind roasted oats to powder.
Add seasoning & rest of the ingredients.
Add more water for consistency (neither thick nor watery)
Pour onto greased idli plates & steam till idli cooker whistles.
Suggestions: Grated carrots could also be added.

Oats and Fruits Kanji for Breakfast

Ingredients:
Oats - 1/2 cup
Milk - 1 cup
Apple - 1/4 cup
Orange - 1 no.
Grapes - 1/4 cup
Banana - 1 medium sized
Sugar - 1 tsp

Method:
Add sugar to milk and boil it. Cook Oats separately in 1 cup of water till soft and tender. Add milk to it. Add the fruits to the mixture and serve it in bowl.

This will be in the consistency of porridge and it is a very apt breakfast recipe.

Recipe using Oats - Dosai

Ingredients:
Oats – 3 cups heaved
Rice – ½ cup
Curd or buttermilk – just enough to cover the oats
Onions – 12 finely chopped (smaller ones)
Green chillies – 2
Coriander leaves – a small bunch
Cooking oil
Salt to taste

Method:
Soak Oats and Rice in the buttermilk for about half an hour and grind it along with green chillies, coriander leaves. It shoudl reach dosa batter consistency. Add salt and chopped onions to the mixture.



In a tawa, pour the batter and spread it a bit thick as Oothappam. Pour oil along side the dosa  and cover it with a lid. After a min or two (this dosa will take more time to get cooked) flip it over (do not cover now).

Remove from fire and serve it with coconut or mint chutney
