Puli Keerai or Keerai Puli

Puli keerai is a dish made using just tamarind and greens no dals are used just like how it is used in Keerai Sambar or Kuzhambu. Though this could be made using Arai Keerai or Mulai Keerai or even Siru Keerai. But as we dont cook Arai Keerai at home normally I make it with the other two. Now after I have started OPOS ing various dishes I tried this in OPOS method too. But for the tradtionalists here is the traditional recipe. 

Arai Keerai/ Mulai Keerai/ Siru Keerai - 1 bunch
Tamarind Paste - 1 tbsp
Red Chilly - 2 nos. 
Salt - 1 tsp
Water - 1/4 cup
Gingely Oil - 1 tsp
Mustard Seeds - 1/2 tsp
Full Urad Dal - 1 tbsp
Asafodeita or Hing - 1/2 tsp

Wash and clean the greens. Ensure you use just the leaves. Even if it is mulai keerai, use just the leaves. The stem can be used in other dishes. Wash the leaves twice or thrice so that salt and other things are removed thoroughly. Add the greens, salt and tamarind paste to a hard bottom pan and cook well. When cooked well grind it to a fine paste. Season with mustard seeds, urad dal, asafodeita and red chillies. Serve with chappati or roti or with hot rice.
