Chittirai Varuda Pirappu (Tamil New Year)

The first day of every Chaitra or Chithirai month is celebrated as New Year by Tamil people. This again calls for celebration. On this day, after cleaning the house and lighting the lamp, Panjangam is read and Panagam and Neer more along with Kosumalli is also offerred as Neivedhyam. Mostly Paanagam and Neer more is distributed to those who listen to the Panjangam.

The day calls for a pompous feast. The menu can be anything with lots of vegetables to ensure abundance of availability of those all through the year. It could be either aviyal, or poricha koottu with all veggies or mixed vegetable koottu.

But it is most important to add all the 6 tastes in our menu on this day. Thus the menu is most families is as follows:

* Raw plantain stir fry or podimas
* Potato kara curry ( Optional)
* More Kuzhambu (mostly lady's finger or pumpkin)

Mostly, Poli and Vadai are made for the afternoon tiffen in large numbers.
